The honda crf 1000l africa twin is one of the most celebrated adventure motorcycles ever to roll out of Honda’s engineering division, and if you’re looking to unlock its true character, a quality aftermarket performance exhaust is exactly where to start. At Max Torque Cans, we’ve developed a purpose-built exhaust solution that fits the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin perfectly, giving you a deeper, more aggressive note alongside the kind of polished, durable finish that your bike genuinely deserves.
Whether you’re tackling green lanes, motorway miles, or loading up for a continental adventure, this exhaust has been designed with the real-world Africa Twin rider in mind. It’s robust, beautifully crafted, and engineered to bolt straight up without any head-scratching or specialist tools. Read on to find out everything you need to know before you buy.
Why Upgrade the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin Exhaust?
The standard OEM exhaust fitted to the honda crf 1000l africa twin is functional — Honda engineers it to pass noise and emissions regulations in dozens of markets simultaneously. The result is often a silencer that’s heavier than it needs to be and acoustically rather muted. Swapping it for a well-engineered aftermarket can transforms the riding experience in several meaningful ways.
First and foremost, you’ll notice the sound. A quality performance exhaust produces a throatier, more characterful note that genuinely suits the adventurous spirit of the Africa Twin. It’s not antisocial or excessively loud — it’s purposeful. Beyond sound, shedding weight from the tail of the bike improves handling balance and can reduce fatigue on longer rides. For a machine that’s designed to go anywhere and do anything, every kilogram counts.
Our exhaust for the honda crf 1000l africa twin is also a genuine visual upgrade. The brushed stainless steel finish looks the part whether the bike is clean off the hose or covered in trail dust. This is a can that ages well and holds its appearance across thousands of miles of use.
What’s Included with the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin Exhaust Kit
We believe in giving you everything you need to get the job done properly. When you order this exhaust from Max Torque Cans, your package includes:
- 1 x Stainless T304 Link Pipe — precision-formed to match the OEM downpipe geometry of the honda crf 1000l africa twin, ensuring a clean, rattle-free connection.
- 1 x Stainless Exhaust Strap — tough, corrosion-resistant, and built to handle the vibration and heat that come with sustained riding.
- 1 x Exhaust Strap Rubber — a correctly sized rubber insert that cushions the mounting point, absorbs vibration, and protects both the silencer and the bike’s frame from wear.
The link pipe style fitting means this performance exhaust is designed to connect directly to the standard OEM downpipes already on your honda crf 1000l africa twin. There’s no need to source additional adaptors, modify existing components, or wrestle with awkward fitment issues. It’s a clean, direct replacement that uses your existing headers as the foundation.
Fitment Details for the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin
This exhaust is specifically designed for the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin 2016 onwards. The link pipe has been developed to match the exact specification of the OEM downpipes fitted as standard from that model year, so you can be confident in a proper, secure fit without modification.
If you’re unsure whether this is the right specification for your particular bike, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our team before ordering. We’d rather take five minutes to confirm fitment than have you receive something that doesn’t suit your machine. Providing your bike’s registration number or VIN when you contact us makes the process quicker and more straightforward.
It’s also worth noting that the honda crf 1000l africa twin comes in both standard and DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) variants. While the exhaust routing on both versions is broadly similar, always double-check your specific variant before purchasing any aftermarket exhaust component.
Installing Your Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin Performance Exhaust
One of the most satisfying things about this kit is how straightforward the installation process is. Because the link pipe is made to fit straight to the standard OEM downpipes, most competent home mechanics will be able to complete the swap in an afternoon with basic hand tools. Here’s a general overview of what the job involves:
- Allow the existing exhaust to cool completely before starting work — patience here will save you from burns.
- Remove the OEM silencer and link pipe from the honda crf 1000l africa twin, taking care not to damage the downpipe collector or any mounting hardware you plan to reuse.
- Offer up the new T304 stainless link pipe, checking alignment before tightening anything fully.
- Fit the exhaust strap rubber into position and attach the stainless strap, again checking alignment before final torquing.
- Start the engine and allow it to run up to operating temperature, then recheck all fixings once cooled.
We always recommend consulting a qualified motorcycle mechanic if you’re in any doubt. A correctly installed performance exhaust on your honda crf 1000l africa twin will reward you with years of reliable, great-sounding service. A poorly fitted one can develop leaks, rattles, or premature wear — so take your time and do it right.
Materials and Build Quality
The link pipe supplied with this kit is manufactured from T304 grade stainless steel — widely regarded as one of the most suitable alloys for high-temperature exhaust applications. T304 stainless offers excellent resistance to the corrosive effects of road salt, moisture, and the inevitable muck that accumulates during adventure riding. It’s also highly resistant to discolouration under heat, keeping that polished look for longer.
All components are produced to a consistently high standard, and the exhaust strap hardware is equally durable. This is not a kit where corners have been cut on supporting components — everything included is designed to perform reliably in the demanding conditions that honda crf 1000l africa twin riders regularly encounter.

The CRF1000L is a 998 cc (60.9 cu in) 270° crank, parallel-twin dual-sport that revived the Africa Twin name for the 2016 model year. It became available in the UK in late 2015 and early 2016 in the US. It was developed as a modern interpretation of its predecessors, the XRV 750 and XRV 650, based on the NXR-750 which won the Paris-Dakar rally four times in the late 1980s. The original V-twin Africa Twin was first sold in Europe from 1988 to the final production year of 2003 but was never brought to the United States. The CRF1000L has also been seen as a response by Honda to the heavier on road-focused adventure touring motorcycles such as the BMW R1200GS, Ducati Multistrada, and Triumph Tiger Explorer with a lighter more off-road focused machine.
Automatic dual-clutch transmission
At the Osaka Motor Show in 2015
In a first for the category, the Africa Twin has the option of an evolution of Honda’s automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT) technology, which remains unique to Honda in motorcycling. This latest evolution of DCT has been specifically developed and programmed to provide off-road ability.
Prototype
Also at Osaka
The first confirmations of a new off-road-focused touring motorcycle came in June 2014 when Honda filed a patent for an externally mounted airbox configuration which would allow for a more slender and lower mounted fuel tank in the future dual-sport motorcycles.[7] This increases off-road handling by allowing riders to slide further forward into turns without being inhibited by a wide fuel tank with a higher center of gravity.
The first full prototype of the CRF1000 was revealed at the 2014 EICMA international motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The prototype was heavily disguised with camouflage and covered in mud so that it did not reveal any specific details about the new motorcycle other than visual details such as a parallel twin engine, dual front disc brakes with ABS, 21-inch front and 18 inch rear tires on spoked wire rims, and the absence of a shift lever, indicating the dual-clutch transmission from other Honda motorcycles such as the VFR1200X and NC700X/NC750X could be an available option.
After the EICMA reveal, Honda began releasing a series of videos titled “True Adventure” documenting the history of the Paris-Dakar rally-winning Africa Twins in the 1980s in anticipation of the release of the new true adventure
