The honda crf 1000l africa twin stands as one of Honda’s most accomplished adventure motorcycles, blending long-distance touring capability with genuine off-road credibility in a package that’s earned legions of devoted fans worldwide. Whether you’re planning multi-week expeditions across Europe, tackling challenging green lanes at the weekend, or simply commuting with a bike that can handle anything the British weather throws at it, the Africa Twin delivers — and fitting a quality aftermarket performance exhaust is one of the most rewarding upgrades you can make to truly unlock its character.
At Max Torque Cans, we’ve engineered a purpose-built exhaust system specifically for the honda crf 1000l africa twin that delivers a deeper, more purposeful exhaust note, meaningful weight savings, and a beautifully finished appearance that complements the bike’s rugged, go-anywhere aesthetic. This isn’t a cheap universal fit-all can; it’s a properly engineered solution designed to bolt directly to your Africa Twin’s standard OEM downpipes without fuss, modification, or frustration.
Read on to discover everything you need to know about this premium exhaust upgrade.
Why Upgrade Your Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin Exhaust System?
The standard factory exhaust fitted to the honda crf 1000l africa twin from the Honda production line is engineered to satisfy strict noise and emissions regulations across dozens of global markets simultaneously. While that makes perfect sense from a manufacturer’s perspective, the compromise is an exhaust system that’s often heavier than necessary and acoustically muted to the point where it doesn’t do justice to the parallel-twin engine’s character.
Upgrading to a well-designed aftermarket performance exhaust transforms the riding experience in several meaningful ways.
First and most immediately noticeable is the sound. A quality performance exhaust produces a deeper, throatier note that genuinely suits the adventurous spirit of the Africa Twin. It’s not antisocially loud or obnoxious — it’s characterful and purposeful, giving the bike a more engaging soundtrack without causing issues with neighbours or attracting unwanted attention from authorities.
Beyond acoustics, there’s the weight benefit. Shedding several kilograms from the rear of the bike improves handling balance, reduces unsprung mass, and can genuinely reduce rider fatigue on those epic all-day riding sessions the honda crf 1000l africa twin excels at.
Then there’s the visual upgrade. Our brushed stainless steel finish looks superb whether your bike is fresh from a detail session or covered in trail dust after a hard day’s riding. This is an exhaust that ages gracefully and maintains its appearance across thousands of miles of hard use in all conditions. For riders who take pride in their machinery — and let’s face it, most Africa Twin owners absolutely do — that matters.

We believe in providing everything you need for a proper, professional installation. When you order this exhaust system from Max Torque Cans, your package arrives complete with:
- 1 x T304 Stainless Steel Link Pipe — precision-formed to match the exact geometry of the OEM downpipe connection on the honda crf 1000l africa twin, ensuring a secure, rattle-free fit that seals properly under all conditions.
- 1 x Stainless Exhaust Mounting Strap — manufactured from corrosion-resistant stainless steel and engineered to handle the sustained vibration and heat that come with serious adventure riding.
- 1 x Exhaust Strap Rubber — a correctly sized rubber mounting insert that cushions the connection point, absorbs vibration, and protects both the silencer body and your bike’s frame from premature wear.
This link pipe style fitment means the performance exhaust connects directly to the standard OEM downpipes already fitted to your honda crf 1000l africa twin. There’s no need to source additional adaptors, modify existing components, or wrestle with awkward compatibility issues. It’s a clean, direct replacement that uses your existing exhaust headers as the foundation, making installation straightforward even for competent home mechanics.
Precise Fitment Details for the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin
This exhaust system is specifically engineered for the Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin 2016 onwards. The link pipe has been developed to match the exact specifications of the OEM downpipes fitted as standard from that model year, so you can be completely confident in achieving a proper, secure fit without any modification or fabrication work.
If you’re unsure whether this exhaust is the correct specification for your particular motorcycle, please don’t hesitate to contact our team before placing your order. We’d much rather spend five minutes confirming fitment than have you receive something that doesn’t suit your machine. Providing your bike’s registration number or VIN when you get in touch makes the verification process quicker and more accurate.
It’s worth noting that the honda crf 1000l africa twin is available in both standard manual transmission and DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) variants. While exhaust routing on both versions is fundamentally similar, it’s always sensible to double-check your specific variant before purchasing any aftermarket exhaust component. The Adventure Sports edition also shares the same basic architecture, though specific fitment can vary depending on equipment level and model year — again, we’re happy to verify compatibility before you buy.
Installing Your Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin Performance Exhaust
One of the most satisfying aspects of this exhaust kit is how straightforward the installation process is. Because the link pipe is manufactured to fit directly to the standard OEM downpipes, most riders with reasonable mechanical competence will be able to complete the swap in an afternoon using basic hand tools. Here’s a general overview of what the installation involves:
- Allow the existing exhaust system to cool completely before starting work — patience here prevents painful burns and makes the job far more pleasant.
- Remove the OEM silencer and link pipe from the honda crf 1000l africa twin, taking care not to damage the downpipe collector or any mounting hardware you plan to reuse.
- Offer up the new T304 stainless link pipe, checking alignment carefully before tightening any fixings fully.
- Fit the exhaust strap rubber into its correct position and attach the stainless mounting strap, again checking alignment before final torquing to specification.
- Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then recheck all fixings once the system has cooled back down.
We always recommend consulting a qualified motorcycle mechanic if you’re in any doubt about your ability to complete the installation safely and correctly. A properly installed performance exhaust on your honda crf 1000l africa twin will reward you with years of reliable, great-sounding service. A poorly fitted system can develop exhaust leaks, irritating rattles, or suffer premature wear — so take your time and get it right first time.

Premium Materials and Build Quality
The link pipe supplied with this kit is manufactured from T304 grade stainless steel — widely regarded as one of the most suitable alloys for demanding high-temperature exhaust applications. T304 stainless offers excellent resistance to the corrosive effects of road salt, moisture, and the inevitable muck that accumulates during adventure riding on British roads and trails. It’s also highly resistant to heat discolouration, maintaining that polished, professional appearance for considerably longer than cheaper alternatives.
All components included in the kit are produced to consistently high standards, and the exhaust strap hardware is equally durable and corrosion-resistant. This isn’t a kit where corners have been cut on supporting components — everything included is designed to perform reliably in the demanding conditions that honda crf 1000l africa twin riders regularly encounter, from salt-soaked winter commutes to dusty summer trail riding.

The CRF1000L is a 998 cc (60.9 cu in) 270° crank, parallel-twin dual-sport that revived the Africa Twin name for the 2016 model year. It became available in the UK in late 2015 and early 2016 in the US. It was developed as a modern interpretation of its predecessors, the XRV 750 and XRV 650, based on the NXR-750 which won the Paris-Dakar rally four times in the late 1980s. The original V-twin Africa Twin was first sold in Europe from 1988 to the final production year of 2003 but was never brought to the United States. The CRF1000L has also been seen as a response by Honda to the heavier on road-focused adventure touring motorcycles such as the BMW R1200GS, Ducati Multistrada, and Triumph Tiger Explorer with a lighter more off-road focused machine.
Automatic dual-clutch transmission
At the Osaka Motor Show in 2015
In a first for the category, the Africa Twin has the option of an evolution of Honda’s automatic dual-clutch transmission (DCT) technology, which remains unique to Honda in motorcycling. This latest evolution of DCT has been specifically developed and programmed to provide off-road ability.
Prototype
Also at Osaka
The first confirmations of a new off-road-focused touring motorcycle came in June 2014 when Honda filed a patent for an externally mounted airbox configuration which would allow for a more slender and lower mounted fuel tank in the future dual-sport motorcycles.[7] This increases off-road handling by allowing riders to slide further forward into turns without being inhibited by a wide fuel tank with a higher center of gravity.
The first full prototype of the CRF1000 was revealed at the 2014 EICMA international motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The prototype was heavily disguised with camouflage and covered in mud so that it did not reveal any specific details about the new motorcycle other than visual details such as a parallel twin engine, dual front disc brakes with ABS, 21-inch front and 18 inch rear tires on spoked wire rims, and the absence of a shift lever, indicating the dual-clutch transmission from other Honda motorcycles such as the VFR1200X and NC700X/NC750X could be an available option.
After the EICMA reveal, Honda began releasing a series of videos titled “True Adventure” documenting the history of the Paris-Dakar rally-winning Africa Twins in the 1980s in anticipation of the release of the new true adventure
